Artemis is a member of the warmongering Amazons of Bana-Mighdall, decendants of the Amazon queen Antiope. Unlike the peace loving Amazons of Themyscira (led by Antiope's sister Hippolyta), Artemis and her tribe were not immortal. Artemis was raised in the secert city of Bana-Mighdall in egypt, mastering the arts of warfare.

When the evil sorceress Circe transported the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall to Themyscira, home of Princess Diana, the two tribes of warrior women fought a ten-year war. An uneasy peace was forged that forced the Egyptian Amazons to settle on an inhospitable part of Themyscira. One Night Hippolyta saw th4e death of her daughter Diana in a prophetic vision. Hoping to save Diana's life, she arranged for a new Contest to be held in order to choose a new Wonder Woman. With the help of a court magician, the sorceress Magala, Hippolyta arranged for Artemis to win the Contest and become the new Wonder Woman. She then dispatched the bow-weilding Amazon to man's world in Diana's place. The warlike, hot headed Artemis was totally unsuited to the role of diplomat, and was Wonder Woman for only a short time before she was murdered by the White Magician.

Rescued from Hades by Diana, who reclaimed her title as Wonder Woamn, Artemis briefly joined a group of demon hunters named the Hellenders. After the Amazon civil war, Artemis became the Shim'Tar or champion, of her people. Her fiery temper cooled by her years as an Amazon heroine and compainion of Wonder Woman, Artemis was Themyscira's Minister of Defense until it's recent destruction.
